Who We Are

Hi, I am John Byrne and I’m passionate about Education and Valuation, particularly the valuation of privately held companies. My passion for education was strongly influenced by my father, who unbeknownst to me at that time, was a thought leader in K-12 education in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. He recognized that education was the key to advancement and that learning was unique to each individual. I value education, in more than one sense.

My passion for valuation began in the early 1980’s when our firm was asked to provide a value for a limited partnership interest owned by a decedent. I volunteered to explore how these investments were valued and, Voila!, my journey began. Early valuation projects were tax compliance oriented and focused on estate and gift tax issues. I also started to work with legal counsel providing damage estimates for litigation claims and advising divorce attorneys on valuation issues related to their cases.

More recently, I was involved with fair value concepts related to financial reporting. Under generally accepted accounting principles, business combinations (ASC 805) and related purchase price allocations are recognized at fair value (ASC 820). I find valuation topics and analysis to be highly rewarding, providing a roadmap to value for a specific audience.

My new path with Exit Planning combines both education and valuation. Throughout my career, I recognized that business owners frequently had a distorted sense of the value of their company. They heard anecdotally, from their peers and associates, that companies were valued on a multiple of EBITDA or Revenue, or some other metric, without understanding the whole picture. I’m on a mission to educate business owners on the value drivers of their business. Education is power, and I’m a big believer in empowerment.
